Collective Appetite
How is eating shaped by social influence? How was your last eating experience? Were you alone or together with someone? At the Collective Appetite project, we delve into the dynamics of eating within social groups.
The Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour (CASCB) is a DFG-funded excellence initiative of the University of Konstanz in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute of Behavioural Biology with the aim of creating a centre of excellence for integrated research into collective behaviour across species and research areas. In addition, the CASCB is a Cluster of Excellence within the framework of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.
In our project "Collective Appetite" we aim to determine the influence of social context on eating behaviour in human collectives. Studying collective behaviour and social interactions in eating contexts, can be used as exemplary system for collective processes.
In our studies, we analyse behaviours, including kinesics, as well as proxemics, to explore whether there are fine-scale processes of behavioural synchronization within groups while eating, as well as individuals’ perception of their group experience. Additionally, we are using innovative 3D body posture imaging technology (VICON Tracking System) in our video lab to explore macro- and micro-behaviours in even greater depth on an objective level.

Looking at social interactions, we use 3D body posture imaging technology to make behaviour visible - from subtle nuances of body language (kinesics) to the spatial dynamics (proxemics) of group movement.
